PXL 2000 + Aiptek MPVR = Easy PXL Movies!
by Roger on October 14th, 2007
I went back and forth trying to decide which camera to buy for the sole purpose of recording my PXL 2000’s output. As many fans of the PXL may already know…there’s not a ton of info out there for these cameras. After various attempts w/ other camcorders, I finally decided on Aiptek’s MPVR digital camcorder. In my opinion the MPVR is pretty much garbage in terms of optics and recording quality, I would say many cell phones would do a comparable job. My interest is in the AV/In the camera offers and the SD flash card as storage. At around $100 (cheaper on ebay) I think it’s the best and most cost effective solution. In addition you don’t need to build or buy and amp for a PXL signal boost.
Using Colten’s diagrams for the RCA Outs and the cable supplied with the camcorder, the PXL 2000 and the MPVR work like a dream. I added a large strip of velcro to the side of both cameras so the MPVR’s LCD now works as the PXL’s viewfinder.
The only downside is the .asf recording format. Using a mac I downloaded iSquint, which converts my files to mpeg-4 format.

DIY: Microphone Built from an Old Telephone
by Roger on July 27th, 2007
Here’s schematic to create your own carbon microphone. I don’t really think this needs a step by step process, since it’s pretty simple. All you really need to have a functioning mike is (1) toggle switch, (1) 9 volt battery, (1) Mono Audio Jack, (1) Carbon Mic Element from an old telephone.
I built mine based on this “instructible”. I have mine in it’s own housing vs. still in the telephone. Either way will work the same. My only modification is to use a 9volt battery vs. 1AA. I tried it w/ the AA but the output was way too low.

Circuit Bent Speak & Math
by Roger on July 24th, 2007
Here’s a latest creation of mine. It’s pretty much all that is left from my childhood Speak and Math. All the switches I have were too large to mount on an actual Speak and Math case so I picked up this small letter box at the local art store. In the box is 4C batteries, a hair ball of wires and the circuit board from the Speak. I’m working on a board schematic to show where all the bends I used are. Below the video are a couple decent starting points for you if you are interested in giving it a shot.
Old School Halftone Screen Pattern

Here’s a quick pattern I created from an old paper. I think the imperfections in the dot’s add some realism to the pattern. Have fun!

The Big Book of Bends 2007
by Roger on February 9th, 2007
Pete of Casperelectronics is gearing up for the execution of his original idea to have a collective book of bends to be published and distributed at the upcomming Bent Festivals in 2007. With only 2 months to spare everyone is encouraged to submit up to 3 entrees to be considered for the publications in this edition of the book. A really cool idea expecially if your name gets printed and you can point to it and be like, ” Yeah, thats me! I totally found that bend!”
More Information is located in Pete’s website.
DIY: Cigar Box Pinhole Camera
by Roger on February 7th, 2007
Paul Beard has created a great 4×5 pinhole built from a cigar box. Besides being a great looking camera, it is complete with shutter and tripod mount, this looks like a great weekend project. Thanks Paul.
Head on over to Paul’s flickr page to read his notes and to see additional shots of this camera.

Homebrew Stereo Camera
by Roger on February 7th, 2007
I’ve came across this post on F295 about Mark B’s slide bar invention that allows a photographer to make Stereo 3D photos with a single aperture camera.
Make your own stereo photo slide bar
The slide bar allows you to take 2 sequential, side-by-side photos of the same scene, rather than simultaneously exposing 2 images.
“This took 2 or 3 hours to put together. Mainly I’ll just show photos below with a few tips, rather than step-by-step instructions. Its pretty easy and self-explanatory.” Mark B writes.
Here are the complete instructions.

DSLRs and pinholes made from film: a match made in heaven
by Roger on January 25th, 2007
Earlier in the week I posted an article on making Pinholes and Zoneplates from film. I’m excited to see Photographer Nicolai Grossman run with the process and have some great thoughts about using film pinholes for your DLSR. I encourage you to check out his very informative site.
